Documenting Your Community:
A Photography-Based Educator Workshop
Wednesday, February 13, 2008
4:30 7:00 pm at Second Street Gallery
Piedmont Council of the Arts and Second Street Gallery have paired with the Office of Statewide Partnerships of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond to offer a FREE information-packed training session that explores the function of photography as a mode of expression for both artists and their subjects.
Jeffrey Allison, Paul Mellon Collection Educator at the VMFA, will lead this teachers' workshop that encompasses language arts, history, math, technology, and art. Educators will explore the connections between history, architecture, and first person narratives as instruments that can inspire and excite students to learn about their own town's history.
Specifically, Allison covers two lesson plans that teachers can use with their classes. In these lessons, students will use photography as a tool to learn about economic, cultural, and environmental issues that make their town unique. Examples of both well-known documentary projects such as those by Lewis Hine and Dorthea Lange as well as projects done by Virginia students will be presented.
Teachers will leave this session with resource guides, lesson plans, and a CD Rom of images from VMFA's exhibition.
This workshop can be applied towards recertification points. Refreshments provided.
